Overcoming Challenges and Finding Success
From February 24–March 2, 2024, INFO College at UMD hosted its annual UMD Info Challenge, drawing students from across Maryland to tackle real-world information challenges. Participants honed team-building skills, enhanced their resumes, and connected with professionals from esteemed companies such as EY and USDA.
The Challenges:
USDA’s FoodData Central (FDC) is an integrated data system that provides expanded nutrient and food component data in one location. This database provides a snapshot in time of nutrients and other components found in a wide variety of foods and food products. For this project, students will analyze historical data and see how the data has changed and remained the same. This insight will provide a better understanding of which nutrients or components should be analyzed and which ones remain constant.
The Data Story:
In a world where dietary choices play a pivotal role in overall health, understanding the composition of our food is paramount. Enter the USDA FoodData Central (FDC), a treasure trove of information encompassing nutrient and food component data. At the recent UMD Info Challenge, our project aimed to delve into this vast database to unravel the evolution of day-to-day food components and identify disparities between datasets.
Our journey began by exploring two primary data types within FDC: Foundation Foods (FF) and SR Legacy. While Foundation Foods provide current analytical data, SR Legacy offers historical comprehensive values predating 2019. We focused our attention on common fundamental food categories such as dairy and egg products, fruits, vegetables, legumes, cereal grains, and baked products, recognizing their nutritional significance and widespread consumption worldwide.
With meticulous preparation, including addressing missing values to ensure data integrity, our analysis kicked off with a comparative examination of SR and FF data. The results were revealing, showcasing significant variance over time in key categories. This variability shed light on the dynamic nature of day-to-day food components, prompting us to delve deeper.
In our quest for understanding, we identified the underlying nutrients driving these changes. This deeper dive provided valuable insights into dietary patterns and nutritional shifts, painting a nuanced picture of the evolving landscape of our diets.
Our findings hold immense significance for stakeholders ranging from individuals to policymakers. By understanding the ever-changing composition of our food, we empower stakeholders to make informed decisions for dietary planning and public health initiatives. Armed with insights from USDA FoodData Central, we pave the way for a healthier future grounded in an understanding of the fundamental elements of our diets.
The journey through the USDA FoodData Central was not merely an exploration of numbers; it was a quest for knowledge that illuminated the intricate relationship between what we eat and our well-being. As we continue to navigate the complexities of modern diets, may our insights serve as a guiding light towards a healthier, more informed tomorrow.

My journey at Info Challenge 2024:
As I reflect on my experience at Info Challenge 2024, I am filled with a sense of pride and accomplishment. The journey was anything but easy, fraught with challenges and obstacles at every turn. Yet, through perseverance, determination, and the unwavering support of my teammate, Yash, I emerged stronger and more resilient than ever before.
The atmosphere at Info Challenge was electric, with teams brimming with enthusiasm and anticipation. However, as a first-time participant, I couldn't help but feel a twinge of intimidation seeing other teams who had previously competed in similar events. Nevertheless, I was determined not to let this deter me from giving my best shot.
The days leading up to the abstract submission deadline were chaotic, to say the least. Juggling schoolwork, assignments, quizzes, tests, and on-campus part-time jobs left me feeling overwhelmed and on the verge of giving up. But something inside me sparked on the day of the submission deadline. Drawing inspiration from my love for making to-do lists, I vowed not to throw in the towel and to see the challenge through to the end.
With just hours to spare, I delved into the problem statement, conducted research, and performed exploratory data analysis. Miraculously, within a mere four hours, I had crafted a compelling data story that I was eager to present to the judges.
As the deadline loomed closer, my teammate and I devised a plan to tackle the project and meet the final submission deadline. Despite encountering numerous hurdles along the way, we persisted, supporting each other every step of the way.
D-Day arrived, and with it came the nerve-wracking presentation and showcase. Despite the lack of time for practice due to heavy rain, we entered the presentation room with determination. Though nerves threatened to overtake me, my teammate's encouragement buoyed my spirits, and we delivered our presentation with confidence.
Receiving constructive feedback from the judges was invaluable, highlighting areas for improvement and providing valuable insights for future endeavors. While we may not have emerged victorious, the experience taught us invaluable lessons in time management, presentation rehearsal, and research methodology.
The showcase round was a testament to the impressive talent and creativity on display, serving as a source of inspiration for future endeavors. Despite falling short of our initial expectations, I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in the Info Challenge 2024, and I am more determined than ever to hone my skills and excel in future datathons.
In conclusion, the Info Challenge was a journey of growth, resilience, and learning. While the road may have been rocky, the experience has left an indelible mark on me, shaping me into a more confident and capable individual ready to take on future challenges with renewed vigor.
